The water guide
Healthy fish start with healthy water. Five short, practical explainers from the NT Labs way of doing things: measure first, treat precisely, maintain always.
The nitrogen cycle, decoded
Every aquarium runs on the same invisible engine. Fish waste breaks down into ammonia (toxic), friendly bacteria convert it to nitrite (still toxic), and a second colony converts that to far safer nitrate, which you dilute with water changes. When fish gasp, sulk or die "for no reason", one of those three numbers is almost always the reason.
Test weekly, and always after adding fish or medicating. You're aiming for ammonia at 0, nitrite at 0, and nitrate as low as practical — many keepers work to under 40 mg/l in freshwater, and far lower in reef systems. A multi-test kit covers the whole cycle in one box; single-parameter kits are the economical way to re-check a known problem.
White spot: act on day one
White spot (ich) is the classic new-fish disease: salt-grain specks on fins and body, flicking against rocks, clamped fins. The parasite's life cycle means the spots you see are only one stage — it must be treated in the water, over the full course, not just until the spots fade.
Treat the whole tank the day you spot it: dose by your aquarium's true water volume (length × width × height, minus rocks and substrate), remove activated carbon from the filter while medicating, and keep oxygenation high. Start a new tank like a lab tech
"New tank syndrome" kills more fish than any disease: a young filter simply has no bacteria yet, so the first fish swim in rising ammonia. The fix is patience plus a head start. Condition tap water first — South African tap water is chlorinated, and chlorine kills the very bacteria you're trying to grow.
Then seed the filter with a live bacterial culture and stock slowly: a few hardy fish, then test ammonia and nitrite every couple of days. Only add more fish when both read zero for a week. A filter starter isn't just for new tanks either — re-dose after medicating, deep filter cleans or power cuts, whenever the bacteria have taken a knock.
Reef chemistry: the big three
Corals are chemistry projects. To build skeleton they draw calcium, carbonate (KH) and magnesium from the water in a fixed relationship — let one slide and the other two misbehave. Typical reef targets: calcium 400–450 mg/l, KH 7–11 dKH, magnesium around 1 250–1 350 mg/l.
Test weekly and dose to replace what your corals consume — steady numbers beat "perfect" numbers that swing. Add ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate tests during the first months of a new marine system, and keep an anti-aiptasia treatment on hand before the pest anemones spread.
Pond rescue: sludge, weed & foam
Ponds fail from the bottom up. Dead leaves and fish waste become a sludge layer that feeds algae blooms, duckweed carpets and that stubborn surface foam — and in South Africa's long warm season it accumulates fast. Clear the cause, not just the symptom: a sludge treatment digests the organic layer, barley straw liquid keeps water polishing itself between cleans.
For koi keepers, spring and autumn are checkpoint seasons: inspect fish as they feed, and treat parasites like argulus (fish lice) or topical ulcers early, when fish are strong. Keep a swab treatment in the kit — with koi, the fast response is the cheap response.

Dose by your aquarium's true water volume: length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 1 000, gives litres — then allow roughly 10% less for rocks and substrate. Remove activated carbon from the filter while treating, follow the label exactly, and always complete the full course, even if fish look better sooner.
For freshwater, the Aquarium Lab multi test kit — or the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate singles — covers the numbers that matter most. For marine tanks, start with the Marine Lab multi kit, then add calcium, KH and magnesium kits once corals arrive. Single kits are the economical way to re-check a known problem.
Not all of them — some medicines affect invertebrates and sensitive species. Every NT Labs label states what the product is and isn't safe with, so read it before dosing and move sensitive livestock if the label says so. If in doubt, ask the Jungle Aquatics team before you buy.
Use the pond-specific products instead. Pond volumes, temperatures and flow rates need different formulations and dosing rates, and NT Labs makes its pond and koi range for exactly that. Dosing a pond from aquarium bottles gets imprecise and expensive very quickly.
Cool, dark and sealed — a cupboard away from sunlight is ideal. Keep bottles tightly closed, never decant into unmarked containers, and replace test kits once the reagents pass their expiry date, because old reagents can read false.
